Having fun in the kitchen
Well, auction season seems to be coming to a close so what to do to occupy ourselves now? How about quality time in the kitchen?
We thought we would try our hand at making candy: caramel, to be exact. Turns out it's really easy, as long as we don't want to cut it into squares. I say that because it's not holding its shape after the cook. It just keeps falling flatter and flatter. It is DELICIOUS, just not quite the right consistency.
So the questions begin. Do we need to try a different recipe? Cook the stages longer? Ask an expert? Haha, I sort of did that on facebook when I posted the picture here, of our boiling sugar. Folks knew right away what it was and had lots of advice about getting it right, but we've had two attempts so far and are still seeking that perfect caramel candy.
And we went out to the family property in the country to dig up some sassafras root. THAT has been a real learning curve, too. Our first batch of tea turned out beautifully but the second had to be scrapped. Who knew feeding the family could get so complex? LOL
I've been toying around with the ideo fo working with my clay and kiln again as it has been several years since I sculpted anything, but the arthritis in my hands is saying "no, no, not that!"
Maybe we'll just work a puzzle. ;-)
