TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– The start of hundreds of people’s Thursday morning started off with burning some calories.
The 10th annual Terre Haute Turkey Trot included a 5k race and 1-mile race. This race picks a local food bank to donate to each year.
This year they donated around 7,000 pounds of food to First Baptist North food pantry. Ethan Page is the race director, and he explains why he thought Terre Haute needed something like this.
“Thanksgiving is the biggest day for running in the United States. I thought that if we could have a great run here for the community, not only could we have a lot of fun as a community and come together around the holidays, but we could also do a lot of good and help a lot of people,” said Page.
Another big reason they started this was so people could have a way to get a healthy start to a typically unhealthy day. This led to Common Ground CrossFit and Yoga to want to be one of the sponsors of this race.
Anyone that participated in the race got a free week of their services. Luke Nelson is one of their head coaches, and he expresses his love for health-conscious events in the community.
“It’s awesome to see people connect with family members and get out, moving, having a good time, and enjoy being healthy and fit. It is an awesome thing to see, and we love to see everyone do it,” said Nelson.
No matter how people enjoyed the Turkey Trot, they helped out many families along the way.
“Its become a tradition for many families here and that we can be a part of bringing some more joy around the holidays,” added Page.
Race officials want to thank everyone that participated to make this the biggest turn out in this race’s ten-year history.
